Should the use of GMOs be banned?
1. Are GM foods safe?
How are they tested? Are they sufficiently regulated?
2. Are we tampering with nature?
Do biotech companies have the right to control GMOs?
3. Do GMOs harm the environment?
4. Should we grow GM crop?
Will biotechnology lead to over production?
5. Do we need GMOs to feed the world?
GM crops represent “the needs and dreams of developing countries” [Kenyan scientists] and “the fears of developed countries” [Green Peace].
6) What does the future hold?
Are GMOs “a force for humanity” or “a reckless experiment”?
Will biotechnology dominate the future?
Can diffusion of GMOs really be stopped? Does it matter?

I believe GMOs should definitely be banned. If GMOs weren't bad for us, as so many companies want us to believe, why would they not be proud to package products as GMOs? Why would they be so sneaky about what they are selling to us for us to put in our family's bodies? Side: Yes!

GMO causes harm to other organisms.Last year a laboratory study was published in Nature showing that pollen from B.t. corn caused high mortality rates in monarch butterfly caterpillars.Monarch caterpillars consume milkweed plants, not corn, but the fear is that if pollen from B.t. corn is blown by the wind onto milkweed plants in neighboring fields, the caterpillars could eat the pollen and perish Side: Yes!

I think you're forgetting that there are many other causes of cancer that do NOT include GMOs. These causes include smoking, UV exposure, obesity, and drug and alcohol uses. The US also only has the 51st highest smoking rate in the world with many European countries above us, and Serbia having the highest in the world. Tyvm. Side: Yes!

GMOs SHOULD BE BANNED!!!!!!!! American Academy of Environmental Medicine (AAEM) states that GMOed foods are unhealthy, GMOed animals show organ failure, gastrointestinal and immune system disorders, accelerated aging, and infertility. It also leaves material that causes long-term damage. Also the toxic chemicals they inserted in a GM corn where found in the blood of a pregnant women. Side: Yes!

They should be banned, there are 23 million chickens killed each day not just because they are slaughtered but because they die of disease from being trapped in a little cage and going to the bathroom on each. we all think that we eat healthy when actually we are eating fake contaminated food brought to us by cruel farms. Even though this question is a double standard question we are eating unsafe food and we don't even know it, and plus to all the people that think it's safe ask your self... if it's really safe why do they not tell us what we are eating. If the food was safe we would know what we were eating and Food.Inc would get their interview with PURDUE, TYSON and all those other top dog meat producers. Side: Yes!
The use of GMOs has not been tested for long periods of time so people do not know what this can cause in the long run. Although it is less time consuming and can feed more people it is unsanitary considering that the animals of food are not meant to be changed by humans but by nature. Side: Yes!

yes! Most plants that are gmoed produce substances that are toxic to humans. Most of the plants that humans consume produce toxins at levels low enough that they do not produce any adverse health effects. There is concern that inserting an exotic gene into a plant could cause it to produce toxins at higher levels that could be dangerous to humans. Side: Yes!

If food that has been GMOed were to be labeled, the market and profit that major corporations bring in would decrease exponentially. Said corporations would realize where consumers are headed (organic foods) and change the type of product being released onto the market. The reason GMOed foods are still being eaten is because no one knows what's been GMOed and what hasn't. Side: Yes!

yes gmoes should be banned because a genetically modified plant could theoretically have lower nutritional quality than its traditional counterpart by making nutrients unavailable or indigestible to humans. we are not going to get all of the nutrition we need or even the right nutrition if we eat false food. Side: Yes!
Some states in Brazil have banned GM crops entirely, and the Brazilian Institute for the Defense of Consumers, in collaboration with Greenpeace, has filed suit to prevent the importation of GM crops. Brazilian farmers, however, have resorted to smuggling GM soybean seeds into the country because they fear economic harm if they are unable to compete in the global marketplace with other grain-exporting countries. This shows that we need to ban GMO and have stricter rules on food regulation. As more and more countries ban GMO importation, we will start to loose money cause we can't export foods to these countries. Side: Yes!
I believe that we are tampering with nature because the GMOed products are changing genetics in our turkeys, produce such as bananas and apples, and poultry. Not only that but it is changing our diets and the farming cultural landscape, meaning the way Farms were in the early 1900's they are no longer the same. Side: Yes!

GMO products also require much more pesticides and insecticides than an organic crop. You are increasing the amounts of toxins and chemicals in your body immensely. If you wouldn't drink from a bottle of herbicide -which is in fact highly toxic- why would you want enormous amounts of it in your food supply? The increased amounts of these toxins can only lead to significant health problems for the future generations. Side: Yes!

GMOs should be banned due to many reasons! The over use of antibiotics is bad according to many expert pharmaceutic doctors because it will cause bacteria within our foods that is resistant to this medicine. This means that it will cause a what scientists call a "Super Bug", which is a super resistant bacteria resistant to antibiotics and can cause major sickness with little help to stop it due to its drug resistance. Many medical scientists say these "super bugs" could cause an epidemic. Side: Yes!

GMOs have no genetic diversity. In the same way that a pure-bred dog (which lacks in genetic diversity) has many more health problems than a good old mutt (containing high genetic diversity). GMO foods are much more susceptible to diseases and issues than an organic, unmodified food. Side: Yes!

What evidence do we have that it hurts us more than regular food? The generation that started with the GMO's are still alive and nothing has been proven that it hurts more than regular food. Don't say it makes us more prone to diseases because we have had the discussion in class where some European countries have higher rate of cancer than us. Side: No!

Some people don't even know what GM food is, none the less what is in it. Studies show that there has been organ failure, in pigs that were GM. Do you want to eat something that can cause long term damage? Since GM food is "new", how can we prove that it doesn't have a negative effect on people? Side: Yes!

GMO's should not be banned because if it weren't for them we wouldn't be able to feed everyone. Many people people think GMO's cause cancer but there are no proven facts it does. Europe banned GMO's and they have the 3 top countries with cancer patients. Small family farms can't feed 300 million people so we need the huge factories using GMO's to feed us. Side: No!

What you just said is utter bull! If we were to tear down those giant corporations and have multiple farmers supplying every city of America due to ratio of population to farmers, we could have an all organic food country. And the only reason why those "top 3 countries" have cancer is not due to food, it is due to multiple other factors usually from over use of medications (from population research sources) Side: Yes!
GMO helps farmers and the economy. Crop losses from insect pests can be staggering, resulting in devastating financial loss for farmers and starvation in developing countries. Consumers do not wish to eat food that has been treated with pesticides because of potential health hazards, and run-off of agricultural wastes from excessive use of pesticides and fertilizers can poison the water supply and cause harm to the environment. Growing GM foods such as B.t. corn can help eliminate the application of chemical pesticides and reduce the cost of bringing a crop to mark. Side: No!

Genetically modified crops were introduced for animal feed about 18 years ago. Over a trillion genetically modified meals have been fed to animals. If this type of feed was producing unusual problems among livestock, then farmers would have noticed a long time ago. The system would not be productive because there would be mostly dead or sick livestock if the claims were true. Side: No!

"The system would not be productive because there would be mostly dead or sick livestock if the claims were true.", have you seriously not been paying attention to any of the videos we have watched throughout this unit? there are unsanitary conditions and you see multiple animals drop dead due to disease or bacteria! Farmers have been noticing this for a while actually! As you saw in food inc., farmers are practically economic slaves to these corporations. Literally everything you said was proven wrong... Side: Yes!
GMO's should not be banned because there are some benefits that are currently helping humans today such as, pesticide reductions tend to be greater for crops engineered to be resistant to insecticides than others that are not according to the Department of Agricultural Economics. Side: No!

The most comprehensive study of GMOs and food that was ever conducted was done by researchers from the University of California-Davis Department of Animal Science. The data represented over 100 billion animals. They found that genetically modified feed is safe and nutritionally equivalent of non-GMO feed. Side: No!

They should be banned because it can cause sickness to all people if they keep producing GMOed animals. In different studies they show organ failure in animals. Americans are fat because of this, the organic food is much more expensive because they are competing against this food. People rather by this food because its cheap. Because they are buying this the big corporations keep getting money to continue GMOing. Side: Yes!
Though if bigger companies switched over to the organic way of life, they can come up with a way to meet the demand. With agricultural industrialization comes a faster way of living, we can go without the chemicals and still meet the demand. We just have to find a way, instead of checking the population with disease Side: Yes!
